Replacing Save Batteries in Retro Cartridges

If a retro game plays fine but forgets your progress every time you switch off, the cartridge is almost certainly fine and the battery inside it is dead. This is the most common repair in the hobby.

How cartridge saves actually worked

Before saves were written to flash memory, many cartridges stored progress in volatile SRAM that only retains data while powered. A small coin cell inside the cartridge kept that memory alive when the console was off. The battery is doing continuous work from the day the game was manufactured.

A typical coin cell of that era was specified for roughly ten to twenty years. Essentially every cartridge using this design is now well past that, so a dead save battery is the expected state rather than a defect. Some survive far longer than rated, which is luck rather than quality.

Confirming it is the battery

The signature is specific: the game plays normally, lets you save, shows the save while powered on, and has lost it entirely after a power cycle. If saves survive being switched off but the game crashes or corrupts during play, that is a different fault and a battery will not fix it.

Games with a battery-backed clock give an even clearer signal, since an in-game clock that has stopped or reset points directly at the same cell. Testing properly means fully powering down, waiting, and then checking — not simply resetting.

What the replacement involves

The job is opening the cartridge, removing the old cell, and fitting a new one. The complication is that original batteries were spot-welded to metal tabs soldered to the board, not seated in a holder. The correct approach is to desolder the old tabs and solder in a replacement cell that has tabs, or fit a battery holder so future replacements need no soldering at all.

What you should not do is solder directly to a bare coin cell. Heating a lithium cell that way risks damaging it and is genuinely hazardous. Tabbed cells exist specifically for this purpose and cost very little more.

Saving your progress before you start

Replacing the battery erases everything currently stored, because the memory loses power the moment the old cell comes out. If there are saves worth keeping — a long-running file, or something of genuine personal value — back them up first using a cartridge save-transfer device.

For most people the saves are already gone, which makes this moot. But it is worth checking before opening a cartridge you have owned since childhood, because the file is not recoverable afterwards.

When to leave it to someone else

You need a security bit to open most cartridges, a soldering iron, and enough soldering experience not to lift a pad. On a common game, learning on it is reasonable and the downside is small. On a rare or expensive cartridge, a slipped iron can cause damage worth many times the cost of paying someone competent.

Sealed and graded games should not be opened at all. A dead battery in a sealed copy is not a problem to solve — the seal is the value, and the game inside was never going to be played.

Recording what you have done

A cartridge with a replaced battery is more useful and, to a player, more valuable than one without. It is also a modification, and buyers reasonably expect to be told. Keeping a note per copy means you can disclose accurately years later rather than trying to remember.
